USBEE Lab

University of Surrey Business and Economics Experiments

Participant rules for lab experiments

  1. You must be over 18 to be included in our database. Registering for our database does not commit you to taking part in any experiments. You will receive emails inviting you to participate in experimental sessions. Only people who have signed up for a session may participate in that session.
  2. Please bring a photo ID (Surrey student/staff card, driving license, passport or other recognized ID) to all sessions.
  3. Please arrive on time to all experimental sessions that you sign up for. If you cannot make the start time for a session, please email usbee_support@surrey.ac.uk at least 24 hours’ notice of your cancellation. If you are late, do not attempt to enter the laboratory or knock on the door. Doing so will disrupt the session.
  4. If more participants arrive on time than are required for an experiment, the experimenter will select participants to be included. Non-selected participants will receive a £2 show-up fee. There is no show-up fee for late arrivals.
  5. If you repeatedly fail to show up for experiments or arrive late you may be disqualified from any future participation. You may contact usbee_support@surrey.ac.uk if there are extenuating circumstances.
  6. Please obey the instructions of the experimenters and USBEE staff at all times during experiments. Failure to do so may lead to you being asked to leave and may disqualify you from future participation.
  7. You may only maintain one identity in the USBEE database. If you deliberately maintain multiple identities, you will be removed from the database and disqualified from future participation.
  8. Please record your personal data accurately in the database. Participants with inaccurate personal data may be removed from the database. USBEE Lab maintains high standards of confidentiality and privacy. See our privacy policy for details.
  9. You may remove your details from the database at any time. To do so, contact the USBEE Director Andy Hill at usbee_support@surrey.ac.uk, Surrey Business School, telephone 01483 68 6352.
  10. These rules and the privacy policy may be updated. We will notify you of major changes in the rules.

Privacy policy

  1. When you sign up to join our database, we will ask you for some information. The information we collect includes: your name, gender, date of birth, what is your first language, whether you prefer to participate in lab/online studies, and your email address. If you are a student, we collect additionally information about your field of studies, expected year of graduation, degree program, and student id. If you are an alumnus, we collect additionally information about your year of graduation and current occupation. If you are a Surrey Supporter, we collect additionally information about your occupation and employment status.
  2. The information collected at sign-up will be used only by researchers and administrators registered with USBEE Lab to invite you to participate in studies and to execute payments for your participation. It will not be made available to any other organisation, or for any purpose other than selecting experimental participants, informing participants about upcoming experiments, monitoring attendance at booked experimental sessions, and executing payments. If you are an alumnus, we will also ask for your consent to share the data you provide with the University’s Alumni Office in order to update your alumnus record. With your consent, we will share your full name, gender, date of birth, year of graduation and current occupation. See alumni privacy policy here.
  3. Demographic data from the participant database may be linked to data generated during experiments anonymously and for research purposes only. To preserve anonymity, individually identifying information will not be linked to experimental data.
  4. The collection and use of your personal data for the above purpose is carried out with your consent. If you are selected to take part in a study, your participation in such study will be voluntary and we will ask for your consent to collect further information about you when you attend. Decisions taken by participants during experimental sessions are typically recorded by the computer software. Unless otherwise stated during the session, your decisions will be anonymous, and payments will be made privately and confidentially.
  5. You are entitled to have your data removed from the participant database at any time. To do so, please contact USBEE Director (see contact details below). As for the data provided during experimental sessions, you will not be able to withdraw your data once it has been anonymised (either from the point of collection or as a result of data manipulation for research purposes).
  6. All research at USBEE Lab has passed ethical requirements, including requirements for data protection. See the University of Surrey ethical procedures here. The participant database is stored on the University of Surrey’s secure storage platform, with access restricted to authorised users only.
  7. For more information about how the USBEE uses your data, please contact USBEE Director Andy Hill at usbee_support@surrey.ac.uk, Surrey Business School, telephone 01483 68 6352.
